staying ahead of the competition (with a 50€ sticker)

8 01 2008

What’s the value of a sticker? Tens of euros, apparently. I finally found and bought a New York Mets cap of the right size yesterday, and I noticed something funny: New Era caps used to stand out because of the round sticker on the lid. It’s been over a year since I bought my last cap, but I’m pretty sure there was just the one sticker the last time I got one. So what did I find yesterday? You guessed it… a second sticker.

Why? Well, I found out that most of the bootleg caps out there have copied the original, and now they too have a round sticker with the size number and the “59Fifty” written on it. Because of this the real New Era has replied by slapping another “this is authentic, original, etc.” badge on top of the famous round sticker. Take that!

I guess what this boils down to is that the second piece of sticky plastic is the reason why New Era can charge 50 euros for a baseball cap. And why others can’t.

ps. I know you’re supposed to leave the round sticker on the hat when you wear it. But what about the new one? What’s the proper way to go?
